Scat Records is an independent label that was spawned in Cleveland in 1989 and is presently located in St. Louis, Missouri. Scat does not specialize in any particular kind of music, beyond the good kind. I like artists with vision, natural talent and expressive ability playing in a basically rock context. Timeless rock albums are the goal. Wholesale inquiries should be directed to my distributor, Revolver USA. Other matters can be addressed to me - click the mail icon at bottom left.

This site is a good place to buy, hear or read about Finn's Motel, Yellow #5, Electric Eels, Mirrors, Styrenes, the Mice, Prisonshake, Guided By Voices, Cobra Verde, Speaking Canaries, Nothing Painted Blue, My Dad Is Dead, Pufftube and many others. Single LPs and CDs are generally $10 or $12 and shipping starts at $2.75. Click the store link at left to enter the secure online shop. Mastercard/Visa, paypal, and payments by mail are all welcome. All the non-analog parts of the Scat catalog are also available at audiolunchbox.com, iTunes, or eMusic if you rock that way.

The Spike in Vain LPs are back in stock finally, I just got the last couple boxes so these are the very last of them. Also, if you were ever thinking of buying My Dad Is Dead's "Out of Sight..." LP or the Hotel Cleveland III 2x10" - do so now, there is but one copy left of each.

There's now a Prisonshake myspace & blog about the new album, links at right. That little preview flash player is gone; when traffic was heavy on it the player either wouldn't work or the server would crash, so enough of that. I've had to push the release date back a month because the pressing plant is so backed up.

Bill Fox's Shelter from the Smoke will hopefully see a September release, and Bill has initially agreed to include all the songs from both versions of the album as well as the Bird of the World 45.

There may be a new Cobra Verde album before the year is out as well.

April 3, 2008

Quick bit of killer news... I spoke with Bill Fox yesterday, and we have agreed to reissue his two mid-90s solo albums, Shelter from the Smoke & Transit Byzantium. If you've been trying to get copies of either of these I know your wallet just sighed with relief. Even better, we'll be issuing both on vinyl (a first) as well as cd. I hope to have at least one of them out by the end of the year.

I'm still working on finalizing art for Dirty Moons, you accumulate a lot of ideas over 12 years... but I'm close enough to entering production to set the release date for July 29. It should be out around that same time in the EU and Australia via Rubber, more on that soon. Look to your right...

February 27, 2008

I've loaded some different tracks from the upcoming Prisonshake album on the streaming player here. I am currently getting all the artwork together and pricing some different packaging options. Once I have that done, within 2 weeks I hope, I will be able to set a release date.

And check this out... our drummer Patrick is a finalist for Redbook's "Hot Husbands" contest. Check it here and help get our boy and his lady a cruise!

Yes, the limited version of the Prisonshake 7" is still available. I've decided against selling them to stores so that they'll last a whjle. As of right now I have a bit under 100 left.

There've been several requests for lyrics, so here they are:

The Cut-Out Bin lyrics by Enkler

Back in the day, before songs were numbered
And only bikers and sailors had tattoos
I work all day, selling records to assholes,
Huffing boo and screwing you.

Some say that rock and roll has died
And at times like this I wish they were right
Watch 'em spawn a little, watch none survive

No one gets a twilight to their career any more
No one gets the chance to make
Mediocre record number four...
When they bring back the cut-out bin,
Save a spot for us, right behind the Pretty Things.

Hey little boy, get out of the bar,
Go call your Mom and sell your guitar!

Entire records of third song, side two
Please save some rack space
For my wretched solo debut...
When they bring back the cut-out bin,
Save a spot for us, right behind the Pretty Things.

Fake Your Own Death lyrics by Griffin

You make me wonder if you're supernatural,
Your lips are all the spirit I need.
You got soul, I got a premonition,
Somebody's gonna set you free.

So don't wait for the clock to strike,
There'll be no if, no when.
You've got so little to say,
I know your secret, I know you're afraid.

I require no explanations,
I don't care where you've been.
It's true, she may not look like a devil
But her horns are just growing in.
That isn't my business, just your dresses and your kisses
And the way that you can twist your thang -
But if you happened to fall right out the window
It's just because somebody spread your wings.

I've been busy with other work (just got in another classical LP collection) but when I get caught up look for more PS "content" to appear.

They're here! Preorders will begin shipping Monday. Pic links to larger version:

I recently found a half dozen Prisonshake tees left over from one of the Roaring Third tours and have added them to the store. link

"When our government is taken over by economic power, that's fascism."
                                         -Franklin D. Roosevelt

"Among the calamities of war may be justly numbered the diminution of the love of truth by the falsehoods which interest dictates and credulity encourages."
                                         -Samuel Johnson

"As societies grow decadent, the language grows decadent, too. Words are used to disguise, not to illuminate, action: You liberate a city by destroying it. Words are used to confuse, so that at election time people will solemnly vote against their own interests."
                                        -Gore Vidal

"To criticize one's country is to do it a service....Criticism, in short, is more than a right; it is an act of patriotism-a higher form of patriotism, I believe, than the familiar rituals and national adulation."
                                  -J. William Fulbright

"Our tradition is one of protest and revolt, and it is stultifying to celebrate the rebels of the past...while we silence the rebels of the present."
                                   - Henry Steele Commager

"The people never give up their liberties but under some delusion."
"The tyranny of the multitude is a multiplied tyranny."
                                       -Edmund Burke

"Nothing in the world is more dangerous than a sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity."
                                        -Martin Luther King, Jr.
